Living in active addiction distorts our perception of reality.
Being in denial of our addiction for years entrenches our denial system. Our thinking is geared to rationalizing our inappropriate behaviour and addiction. As we enter recovery and we develop a more realistic view of the severity of our addition, these maladaptive coping mechanism with regards to our thinking persists. We show the same rationalisation and justification for our behaviour, attitudes and beliefs even when they prove to be ineffective in our lives, and an obstacle to ongoing recovery. Even when we are abstinent from our drug of choice, we need to have the humility to accept that we cannot trust our own thinking, yet. We need to make decisions in consultation with others who have more experience in recovery. With time as our attitudes, faulty beliefs and old behavioural patterns change, we become more grounded in reality and less defensive to suggestions. As written in the 12 promises of AA, We then develop our intuition to cope with situations which use to baffle us.
Need help with old thinking patterns which prove to keep you stuck.
